The aim of this coursework is to try to identify patterns and rules associated with the game and explain them in mathematical terms. Disc A can only go on top of Discs B and C, but Disc B cannot go on top of disc A) * The object of the game is to get all the discs to move from pole A to pole B of C in the least number of moves. * Only one disc may be moved at a time. It is clear that there is an element of doubling involved, as the least number of moves nearly doubles each time. When I add the extra column see above, it is clear that there is a doubling element involved. When I look again, I can see that the pattern is the previous term doubled plus 1. This can be expressed mathematically as: Un = 2(Un-1) +1 This can be shown in: 1. For 1 disc, it takes 1 move to move disc A from pole 1 to pole 3; 2. For 2 discs, it takes 3 moves: 2(Un-1) +1 = 2(1) + 1 = 3 3. For 3 discs, it takes 7 moves: 2(Un-1) +1= 2(3) + 1 = 7 4. For 4 discs, it takes 15 moves: 2(Un-1) +1= 2(7) + 1 = 15 5. It can be seen that there is symmetry involved in each pattern. The symmetry is always about the name of the bottom disc. I.e. with 3 discs the symmetry is about disc C and this is the bottom disc From the coding, I can also see that the pattern of moves for 2 discs is present in the beginning of 3 discs, 4 discs etc. The pattern for 3 discs is also in the pattern for 4 discs and so on. This is can therefore be explained as: In n number of discs where n is greater than 2, the first three moves will always be ABA. This is because the n-1 discs pattern is included in the n pattern. We have (Un-1), because we take into account the previous terms pattern when making the next tower. We have the 2 term because this pattern is repeated twice, firstly to deconstruct the tower and then to rebuild the tower on top of the bottom disc. We have the +1 term because this is where the bottom disc moves from Pole A to Poles B or C. This can be demonstrated when we move three tiles. ABA This is the move pattern for 2 tiles (Un-1). This allows C to be able to move. C This is when the bottom tile moves and we therefore get the +1 from. ABA This is where the doubling element comes in as well as the n-1 discs moves pattern. This is where the tower is rebuilt on top of disc C. So overall, we get the formula: 2(Un-1) +1 There are limitations to this however. Un-1 has to be an integer because we cannot have 3.5 moves. Un-1 has to also be equal to or greater than 0 and has to be an integer because the formula wouldnt work as the result would be negative and we cannot have a negative number of moves. Formula B Finding the formula that shows how many times a certain disc moves From formula A I now have a basis on which to work. Given a certain number of discs I need to be able to say how many times a desired disc moves. Firstly, I need to analyze my results from the coding. There is a doubling, well halving element involved depending on which way you look at it. The table above shows how many times a certain disc moves. Whenever a new disc is added to the sequence, such as in Disc 4, the number of moves for Disc A doubles. I.e. As you go down the table the number of moves for each disc doubles. When I look at the results, I notice that they are all from the 2n pattern. Therefore I can come up with the relationship for the number of times each disc moving being: Number of times a certain disc moves = 2n-d with d being the disc number. So in Disc A, the number for d would be 1, as this is the first disc. Disc B would be 2 etc. In the series for 6 discs, the terms would be Disc A: 2n-d = 26-1 = 32 Disc B: 2n-d = 26-2 = 16 Disc C: 2n-d = 26-3 = 8 Disc D: 2n-d = 26-4 = 4 Disc E: 2n-d = 26-5 = 2 Disc F: 2n-d = 26-6 = 1 This therefore works. Now I have to prove that this works. We can see that Disc B always moves half as many times as Disc A. If we do 2n we get how many times Disc A Moves always. If we do 2n-2 we get how many times disc B moves always. This is because as we take more away from 2n we get smaller and smaller until it ultimately converges to 0. Taking 1 away from this halves the number of moves; whereas taking 2 away quarters the number of moves. Disc B always moves less times than Disc A because of the recurring pattern. A has to move more times, because it has to keep going on top of the larger tiles as the rules state. A has more options to move than B because it is smaller. There are limitations to this however, because we cannot have d being greater than n because the formula would not work. It wouldnt work because we cannot have half of a move or a quarter of a move. We cannot also have n being less than 1 because of the same principal. The number of moves and the disc number have to also be an integer because we cannot have Disc A moving 3.5 times. The Link The series above is a geometric series. I know this because the difference is different each time. The general way to write a geometric series is: General: a + ar + ar2 + ar3 + arn-1 The terms: a is the starting number in the sequence. I will use a 6 tiled sequence so my starting number from the table will be 32 as this is the number of times disc A moves. Ratio r This is the amount that a is multiplied to get the next term. So 32 is multiplied by 0.5 to get 16. Our sequence is: S= 32 + 16 + 8 4 +2 +1 To get the sum of a geometric sequence, we need to multiply by the common ratio (0.5) S = a + ar + ar2 + ar3 + + arn-1 rS = a + ar + ar2 + ar3 + +arn-1+ arn S-rS = a arn This can be expressed as S(1-r) = a(1-rn) Divide this by 1-r gives: a(1-rn) S= 1-r Before I can use this information however, I need to determine a formula to get a. I can use the formula I discovered above but just modify it slightly. To get a the formula is: 2n-1 as this is the formula for Disc A always. So the formula above instead of being 2n-d could have also been 2n-1 for the same principals. With n being the disc number you are trying to find. Disc 50 would be 249 and disc 3 would always be 22 and so on. Therefore I can now substitute in my values in a pile of 6 discs to get the formula that links formula A and B. To determine the ratio we have to just see how much the sequence is decreasing each time. 32 + 16+ 8 + 4 + 2 + 1 To get the next term suing the general geometric sequence rule, it says that we have to multiply 32 by a constant. a ar. So: a ar is the same as ar divided by a. 16 = 0.5. This is the ratio. 32 Therefore for the sum of my geometric series, the formula should be: a(1-rn) S= 1-r S = 25(1-0.56) 0.5 S= 31.5 = 63 0.5 Therefore the sum of a 6 termed series is 63. This can therefore be expressed as: If the number of discs in the pile to start with is even then the bottom disc will land where you place Disc A to start off with. If the number of discs in the pile is odd however, then the bottom disc in the pile will finish up on the pole where you did not place Disk A. Therefore where you put Disc A can be considered crucial to where you want your pile to land Overview: If I have 25 discs in my pile, I can expect there to be: 33554431 moves involved in the series. When they eventually arrange to meet in person again, the father is insistent that they meet for lunch, even though the daughter has made it clear she would prefer something else. The fact that the daughter is now vegetarian and her eating habits have changed drastically seems an issue her father cannot adapt to. He constantly questions her eating habits, encourages her to eat more and insists on buying her groceries constantly despite her protests, and their conversation is stilted, â€Å"The rest of the lunch was spent in polite enquiry† (Ng-Chang, Year). The father appears to be attempting to revert back to their childhood relationship through food and refuses to acknowledge that his daughter has changed. Paragraph 2 (Hamlet) In the Shakespearean play â€Å"Hamlet†, the reader is witness to tragic story in which the protagonists parents and their actions and weaknesses, ultimately lead to his demise. To begin with, after his father King Hamlet dies, the character of the younger Hamlet is immediately disturbed by the actions of his mother. Background Information In 1998, StarHub first introduced the English Premier League to Singapore and has constantly secured broadcasting rights for the past 12 years. During that period, local telecommunications rival, SingTel, has launched their own pay-TV service named mio TV on July 2007, signaling its intention to rival StarHub to be the nations main pay-TV provider. In 2008, SingTel made its first step by securing the media rights to the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League from 2009 to 2012. With the rights for these prestigious European football competitions, many StarHub pay-TV customers were forced to sign up with SingTels mio TV to satisfy their needs. One year on, in October, SingTel rocked the nation by announcing their victory in the bidding war for the media rights for the English Premier League, which is known now as the Barclays Premier League, from 2011 to 2013. The Art and Science of Economic Analysis 3.1 The Economic Problem In the article, it is clearly identified that the resources which led to Starhub bringing in the Barclays Premier League (BPL) to Singapore are human capital and the entrepreneurial ability of the firm. Human capital was shown in the form of knowledge they had on the wants of the locals, and the entrepreneurial ability of StarHub made them realize that they could profit from this project. It was exactly the same two factors that led SingTel to wrestle for the BPL media rights from StarHub. Having observed the huge economic benefits StarHub enjoyed with the monopoly of the BPL media rights in Singapore, SingTel realized they too, would profit hugely from the ownership of the BPL media rights. Thus, SingTel launched a bid to rival StarHub for the rights, which sparked off a bidding war between the two telecommunications firm. Eventually, SingTel earned the rights to broadcast the leagues game for the next 3 years, starting from 2010. 3.2 The Science of Economic Analysis SingTels decision to foray into the Pay-TV market and especially, the market for televised sports like soccer is not due to a normative economic statement, or opinion, made by their staff. Instead, it has been based on a positive economic statement, which is backed by concrete facts. The decision to outbid StarHub for the BPL media rights was greeted by the stock market with changes to the share prices of both firms. StarHubs price dived 16 cents to a low of $2.01 before closing at $2.03 yesterday. SingTels share price rose from $3.25 to $3.31 before closing at $3.28. (A whole new ball game in pay-tv market, 2009, October) This supports the statement that the local market for the BPL is lucrative, as the stock market has made changes to reflect the expected future gains of SingTel, and the foreseen loss of StarHub. Having said so, the change in the share prices are definitely in response to SingTels successful bid, thus eliminating the possibility that the fallacy that association is causation was committed. 4. Economic Tools and Economic Systems 4.1 Three Economic Questions Of course, before the bid was launched, SingTel had to know what to do should they win the bid. Hence, the three economic questions learned in Microeconomics come into play. Firstly, SingTel has identified the broadcasting of Barclays Premier League matches as a service they wish to provide to the nation. Secondly, the launch of mio TV in 2007 paved the way for the bid, with SingTel in the clear that they would use the mio TV as a portal to broadcast programmes, especially the BPL games in the future. With the above two questions answered, SingTels ultimate aim was to overtake StarHub as the nations leading pay-TV provider. Hence, their target market would be the existing subscribers to StarHubs pay-TV, and more notably, the huge number of subscribers to the BPL games and other sports programmes. 4.2 Negative Spillover Costs Negative spillover costs have been incurred with SingTels foray into the local pay-TV market. Economic Decision Makers 5.1 The Firm The answers from the three economic questions, namely what service to produce, how and who to produce the service for, reiterates the fact that SingTel is a firm, just like StarHub. Firms are economic units created by entrepreneurs looking to earn money through the combination of the various resources to produce a good or provide a form of service. A more specific term to describe SingTel and StarHub are that they are separate corporations. Corporations are one of the most highly-valued forms of business, often equipped with significant financial power. Funds can be raised quickly through the sale of the corporations stocks, which also leads to the company having an array of stockholders. Behind the strong financial wealth are several drawbacks. Firstly, stockholders are unable to have a significant say in the operations of the corporations with their votes making up only a minority. Instead, a board of directors is often entrusted with the job of making corporate decisions with their bigger shares. Corporate income is also taxed twice, resulting in more profits being used to pay taxes. Despite that, corporate incomes are often huge sums of money, and the taxes would not be able to affect it much. 6. Demand, Supply and Markets 6.1 Demand, Supply and Market Equilibrium for SingTels mio TV For SingTels mio TV, the demand and supply increases by the same value. The increase in demand is attributed to the successful bid of SingTel for the Barclays Premier Leagues media rights. With the media rights, SingTel is able to broadcast the BPL games on their pay-TV service. This would cause a significant increase in the subscribers for mio TV as the subscribers want their dosage of BPL football. This is in line with the taste and preferences of the subscribers, which is a determinant of demand. Hence, there will be a rightward shift for demand. The change in supply for SingTels mio TV is due to SingTels expectations on the future prices of their sports package, which is a determinant of supply. With the hype for the BPL matches present now, it would bring along sales for the sports package. However, in a years time, people might be more interested in other sporting events, and the BPL matches would not appeal as much to the public. As a result, SingTel would then have to reduce their prices to increase sales as the sport package would turn into a luxury product, instead of a necessity. This would see a leftward shift for supply. With an identical shift in the demand and supply curve, the equilibrium price will remain the same. 6.2 Demand, Supply and Market Equilibrium for StarHubs pay-TV For StarHubs pay-TV, a fall in demand has been observed. This is a result of their failure to continue providing Singapore with the BPL matches on their pay-TV service. As such, consumers desperate for their fix of football decided to make the jump to SingTels mio TV due to their taste and preference for the BPL matches. This is the determinant of demand that causes the fall in demand. There is no change reflected in the supply curve as the channels in the sports package are still present. However, the only difference is the removal of the BPL content. Hence, there is no change in supply. As such, the equilibrium price has reduced to account for the fall in demand. 7. Elasticity of Demand and Supply 7.1 Price Elasticity For many Singaporeans, the Barclays Premier League matches are not considered as a necessity to them. Hence, the demand of SingTels sports package is more price elastic to the general public. T oday I will be discussing why I believe "that the date of Australia day should be changed". ARUGMENT 1: Native Australians associate January 26th with the invasion of their country and they deserve to mourn on the day their ancestors were invaded. It is a painful reminder of the harmful past that the aboriginals had to endure, the commencement of massacres, oppression , and land gr abbing from the aboriginals in some cases was done with absolute brutality. For aborigines, 26 th January isn't a day where they celebrate to respect the diversity of Australians, but a day where suffering began for their race. To celebrate such a day would mean to cherish over the genocide of their ancestors. We (as in the other cultures in Australia) should support these people by not celebrating Australia day due the devastation that begun upon the aboriginal people after this day over 2 centuries ago. If you guys think about the massacres of aboriginal people over the 2 centuries after this day, what is so good about celebrating a day on which reminds ever y one of the sadness, the atrocity, the torture that took place? How do you feel about celebrating a day that marks the devastation of the aboriginal community ? What right do we have to celebrate such a devastating day?! A boriginals living in Australia deserve to mourn the atrocity their ancestors went through. They should not be asked to just forget about it and move on . We should be respect the fact that the aborigine community is considerate enough to let us live on their land, if it weren't for their generosity, Australia would not have been the country it is today. ARGUMENT 2 : The day relates to the destruction of the native population way of life and culture. Which leads me to me next argument , According to the UN Genocide convention, the indigenous aboriginal population dropped from about 1 million to 0.1 million (which is 100,000) between 18 th to 19 th century , which was after the European settlers arrived. What caused this m assive population to drop? Well for the following reasons , 1. The European brought dis eases such as small pox, influenza, chicken pox, measles and many more to this land which infected thousands of these aboriginal people since they weren't immune to the unfamiliar diseases, therefore in a way indirectly killing them. 2. The British settlers didn't hesitate to annihilate many of the aboriginal tribes, just so they can come here and live with their families . The cultures of different tribes were destroyed too. Their rightful freedom was snatched away from them after 26 th of January. Their lives were terroris ed after this day, and yet till this day we celebrate such a daywhy? ARGUMENT 3 : The Australian day celebrated on January 26 th glorifies the triumph of imperialism, while at the same time ignoring the guilt presented by the day. Many Australians celebrate Australia day as a good and a positive day. If we celebrate this day we are just disrespecting the fact of what happened here over a century ago, we are just forgetting the lives that were lost and moving on believing everything turned out right. On that day, indigenous people were displaced and disempowered to the extent which they were made slaves b y the very people who asked them to live on their land. I am not sure about you guys but this makes my blood boil. From a personal point of view, I believe that the date of this day should be changed to have inclusivity . What I mean by inclusivity is that we change this dat e to some other day where people of all cultures get together and celebrate Australia day, as it is multicultural country.
